Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and Schedule II-V Drugs

New legislature allows a licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to possess, prescribe, and administer nonscheduled prescription drugs and controlled substances included in Schedules 2 through 5, within the parameters of his or her education, training, and national certification. In addition, the requirements include the use of the Department of Community Health’s electronic monitoring system. Before prescribing, the APRN would have to consider the data in that system to determine whether prescribing or administering the controlled substance to the patient would be consistent with safety and not subject to abuse. In addition, the APRN is required to report the prescription information back to the Department of Community Health.
